One Small Step CD now available!

Brightskull News 9/14/09
Covers are screenprinted, vinyl is done, and insert after insert has been folded and stuffed. That means that the MOUNTAIN ASLEEP / ANTILLES split 7" is now available for mailorder! This release features amazing artwork from Ben Sears and top-notch recording, making it one of the most exciting releases we've been a part of since the kodan armada/montcalm split. Mountain Asleep and Antilles are both amazing bands with amazing people in them, and we're excited to watch them grow. Both are starting to get out of town for a lot of regional weekend dates, so keep an eye on both their sites and watch them soon in a basement near you!

Copies are available from us for $4ppd ($4.50 through paypal to info@brightskull.com), and will also be available from No Idea Records in the next couple of weeks.

In much sadder news, we're sad to announce that NAKATOMI PLAZA played their last two shows ever over the weekend in Brooklyn. While sad to see them go, we're excited to see what they do next. We've still got plenty of copies of their 3rd full length "UNSETTLED" on vinyl, now on sale for $5ppd. You should also check out their new self-released full length "GHOSTS" which is an amazing ending to an amazing band. Copies are available directly through the band at www.nakatomiplaza.com, or digitally through itunes, emusic, amazon, etc.

that's all for now, stay tuned for more! <3 jamie brightskull

A release! Wow! In May we are going to be releasing our first record in over a year, a split 7" between louisville's MOUNTAIN ASLEEP and northern ohio's ANTILLES. Masters will hopefully be sent of in the next week or so, and hopefully we'll get the records back in time for Mountain Asleep's three week tour in May. If you are interested in helping out with shows in the northeast/east coast drop me a line at jamie@skullalley.net.
In the meantime, check out MOUNTAIN ASLEEP and ANTILLES on myspace.

Whoa, things have been crazy around these parts and I've neglected to update this for some time. Our new venue, Skull Alley, opened in the middle of June and has been a resounding success so far. Bands, promoters, and average showgoers around here have been amazed at the space and the bands we're bringing through town. If you get a chance, check us out at www.skullalley.net.

Obviously, running a new venue has been dominating my time so Brightskull has taken on sideproject status for the time being, though I'm starting to focus more on it as Skull Alley becomes more and more established. We're still hard at work on the benefit comp (no release date as of yet) that will be well worth the wait (sorry bands! i know you want those tracks released someday!), and right now we're basically just holding for final artwork. Up next after that will be a new 7" from louisville darlings Mountain Asleep, hopefully out sometime this winter. After that, who knows? I've got some ideas, but way too early to start talking about them.

In other label news, Zack and Jessica from One Small Step recently moved from Louisville to Milwaukee to pursue other interests. No word yet on whether or not they plan to play shows up there, so keep an eye out. Either way, we're happy to announce that Brightskull is entering the digital age and working on getting One Small Step's CD into itunes and emusic! We'll keep you posted as that progresses!

First I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the people who came out to the One Small Step CD release party at Ear X Tacy and/or Lisa's last week. We all had a great time and were happy with the turn out! To everyone who didn't make it, be sure to check out One Small Step's new CD "another shelter" available now at Ear X Tacy in Louisville, or online at our new webstore: SKULL ALLEY. All Brightskull releases are currently available, as well as an ever-growing catalog of Tshirts, records, stickers, buttons and more!

In the next couple of months, along with promoting the new One Small Step CD and Prideswallower 7", we're going to be finalizing and pressing a benefit compilation for The Center For Women And Families in honor of Dylan, featuring tracks from Nakatomi Plaza, Attica Attica, Black Cross, One Small Step, Lemuria, Latterman, Defiance Ohio, and many many more. It's been over a year in the making and, well, an intense experience to say the least. I'm really, really happy at the songs everyone is submitting and I think you will be too. <3 Jamie

So it's been a year since the last update, so I'm going to write a quick one. First off, I'm working on revamping the site and getting everything fully functional/updated, keep an eye out in the new year for that. Things are going great in the Brightskull camp nowadays, after about nine months of figuring out things since moving back to Louisville. NAKATOMI PLAZA has gotten great reviews for their full length Unsettled," and we're excited to hear the new material they're writing right now. Be sure to check out the vinyl version of Unsettled at a distro near you, or at Interpunk.com.

In other news, we've released a new seven inch for louisville's PRIDESWALLOWER called Lifeswallower, with nice two color screenprinting inside and out. Get copies now at No Idea, Rev Hq, or www.shirtkiller.com. Color vinyl available only through mailorder for $4ppd.

We're also happy to announce a new CD release out January 2008 for Louisville's ONE SMALL STEP. Keep an eye out!

I'm happily awaiting the end of this year, hoping that it will leave whatever strange dark cloud has been following me around all year behind with it. Many of you who know me personally have already heard this, but for those of you who haven't my little brother Dylan died last month of a tragic accident at the age of 18. I've since moved from Seattle back home to Louisville and been working on picking up the pieces.

Dylan was an active member of the punk community here in Louisville from the young age of 13, promoting countless shows and playing in numerous bands, including a band on Brightskull: POCKET BOMB. His uplifting spirit and thirst for life affected those around him in ways that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. I'll miss him as a brother, as a friend, and as an inspiration.

Naturally, there are some changes in store for Brightskull. There's something about tragedy that brings out new strength and resolve. I'm in the process of incorporating the label into a non-profit organization. Every record that will come out from henceforth will be a partial benefit for a local cause of the band's choosing. I've also set up a memorial fund to release his writing as a zine, release a benefit comp for a local rape crisis center (one of his unrealized dreams I found in his journal), and to promote actions that benefit and strengthen the local DIY community through art, music, and activism.

In label news, the Nakatomi Plaza "Unsettled" LP preorders are all shipped out, and copies have landed at NO IDEA and SLAVE UNION. You can also order copies for $8ppd through Brightskull. Nakatomi Plaza will be heading out on tour for a week in January (see dates below), as well as another week in february and three weeks in March to support the CD release date for Unsettled (thank you Red Leader Records!!!). Be sure to check them out on these dates with their new sound as a three piece. They'll have copies of the LP with them, but no CD until March!

Ayin is also gearing up to head out for a short tour at the beginning of January to support the release of their new CD "FEAR OF TIGERS" coming out on a fellow Louisville label, Shrodinger Records. Come out and check them out on tour, and maybe hang out with their cute mohawked roadie (yours truly! my first tour since the last armada tour!).

Speaking of the Armada, I found the last 150 copies of the Kodan Armada / Montcalm split 7" when I moved back to town. Pick one up before they're gone forever. Adam and Cory's other bands IN TONGUES and PRIDESWALLOWER are both planning on recording in the next two months for releases on Brightskull, and are playing a couple of shows coming up for you Louisville kids.

MANHATTA is also getting ready to record for a split 7" with PRIDESWALLOWER to come out on Brightskull.

There's more to say, but that's enough for now!
